Overview
Prawn Noodles and a Dream is an independent short documentary exploring the journey of a young hawker determined to reinvent his mother’s recipe while building a future of his own. Through his story, the film reflects on Singapore’s hawker culture — a landscape shaped by craft, resilience, and generational change.
I worked on the film as Producer & Director.
Production Approach
Developed over several years, the film was shaped through extensive conversations with its subjects, allowing the narrative to focus on personal conviction rather than process alone. The visual language was designed to elevate the story beyond a traditional food documentary, emphasising character, atmosphere, and the emotional weight of everyday labour.
Production and post-production were executed with a lean team, requiring careful planning and close collaboration to achieve a cinematic finish within independent constraints.
Outcome
The film was screened at multiple international festivals, including a screening in Seoul, and was selected as a finalist at the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia — an Academy Award–qualifying festival.
